Green Schools Mascot Contest

Washington-Hoyt’s Green Schools Program is now in its second year.  And we need a mascot!

Can you create a little creature who can be a mascot for our school’s program?  The mascot will appear wherever Green Schools is mentioned—such as all Green Schools literature, in Cougar Tales and on the Green Schools bulletin board.

What are some of the characteristics that should belong to our mascot?  Well, our little creature is definitely concerned about looking after our environment.  He/She wants us to recycle, switch off lights when we’re not using them, and think twice before throwing things in the garbage.  Our mascot is also inquisitive and wants to learn more about how we can help look after our earth.

The contest is open to all Washington-Hoyt students.  Please send us a drawing of your mascot idea on an 8.5” x 11” piece of paper.  Clearly print your name and the name of your teacher on the paper and turn it in to your teacher.  The deadline is Friday, February 27th.  We’re looking forward to seeing your ideas!

Washington State Math Olympiad  A Celebration of Mathematics for Grade 5 - 8 Students Dear 5th grade parents, The Washington State Math Olympiad is a state math competition that covers mathematical material consistent with the Washington State Essential Learning in Math and also with standards published by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM). The competition is open to fifth through eighth graders in a team-format. Each team consists of 4 students. The next contest is on Saturday, May 2nd, 2009.      Teams are recognized for having achieved at the levels superior, excellent, very good or good in each of six components: a long session problem, and five short session problems in the content areas of Number Sense, Probability and Statistics, Measurement, Geometric Sense, and Algebraic Sense. The long session is one hour long. It challenges teams to work on an applied mathematics problem and document their solution, modeling how mathematics is done in the world outside of a school environment.  The short sessions are 20 minutes each. These sessions challenge teams to demonstrate their mathematical knowledge of the content areas similar to short answer problems in the WASL. For detailed information, please visit http://www.sound-decisions.org/olympiad/default.htm. I would like to volunteer as a Math Olympiad coach for our interested 5th graders at Washington-Hoyt (up to two teams). My goal is to create a fun team learning experience for our children and to help them gain problem solving and teamwork skills. If your child is interested in participating in the training and the contest, or if you have questions, please contact me at zhuma@plu.edu. I would like to invite you to an informal meeting regarding this opportunity on Tuesday February 10th at 6:30 pm. in Washington-Hoyt school cafeteria. I plan to work with the team members on Tuesdays at 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm from February 17th through the beginning of May. Sincerely, Mei Zhu (Yina, Michael and Ann Finch’s Mom) Mathematics Department, Chair Pacific Lutheran University zhuma@plu.edu __________________________________________________________________________________________________ Missoula Children's Theater is coming on February 23rd through February 28th!  Auditions will be held after school on Monday the 23rd from 3:15-5:15.  Approximately 50 children will be casted for our school production of "Robin Hood".  Friday, February 27th, there will be an all-school assembly presented by our touring directors.  Saturday, February 28th, the cast and crew will have a 3:00 and 7:00 performance!  Many volunteers will be needed.  Please note that auditions will be closed this year.  We will have a gathering space (most likely in the library) for parents during the auditions.  Also, if you know your child has any conflicts during the week or is not feeling well please do not have them audition.  The directors do not keep an alternate list and we have lost spots for kids to participate due to drop-outs in the past.  We look forward to an outstanding full week of hard work, participation, entertainment and fun!  If you have any questions please email or call Alison Hoseth at awigstromhoseth@hotmail.com or 761-9730. _________________________________________________________________________________________________ After School Art Parents can call Paul Blanchard 759-9669 for more information or visit www.WaHoyt.org  to sign up for classes! _____________________________________________________________________________________________________
