Golden Acorn Award Nominations
2010-2011

We all know that our school wouldn’t survive without the hours and hours of hard work by our many volunteers and dedicated educators. Now you have a chance to let those extra special ones know you’ve noticed all they’ve done. If you know of a volunteer and/or an educator who has consistently gone the extra mile for our school and community, be sure to nominate them for the Golden Acorn Award. This extraordinary award only comes along once a year, and the nomination form is your opportunity to shine a light on a deserving person. The benefit of presenting a Golden Acorn Award is two-fold. First, it recognizes an individual who has given outstanding service to children. Secondly, it supports financial grants for students pursuing post-secondary education. Donations are made in each recipient’s name to the fund, which in turn contributes to the future of youth by awarding grants to students who are freshmen entering post-secondary education.
We would like you to participate in the selection of our award recipient(s) through your recommendation.
The Golden Acorn Award Committee will make the final selection.
Be sure to fill out the nomination form below and turn it in to the office by Friday May, 13th.

This May, on Friday the 13th, non-fiction Author Kelly Milner Halls
( http://www.wondersofweird.com/ ) will spend the day at Washington-Hoyt exciting kids about research and writing.  Milner-Halls writes award-winning kids books exploring her many interests: wild horses, sasquatchs, dinosaurs, mummies, dinosaur mummies and much more.  Her zest for the unusual and love of kids and writing will provide an amazing experience for everyone.

Washington-Hoyt’s Green Schools team is sponsoring our annual Litter Pick-Up day set for Saturday May 14th from 10:00 - 11:30 am. Kids and parents are invited to come and help pick up litter around the school. Sign-up forms were sent home in the Friday folders. We’ll have snacks, beverages, a treasure map with grand prize - and, of course, a great opportunity to help clean up the neighborhood around our school.

We did it!

We met our March Food Drive goal to help our community! Now...look for a date when we’ll see Mrs. Pedee and Mrs. Norling dressed as bald old people and Dr. Knight wearing his cow costume in a tutu!

We are continuing the food drive through April, and the deadline is Tuesday, May 3rd. If we reach April’s food drive goal, the kids will win a Free Dress Day but the Teachers’s will have to wear the school uniform!

Childcare

Washington/Hoyt (MOM) of Levi, Annie, and Von (with three other children as well)
is looking to do some before and after-school childcare for the 2011/2012 school year.
I can pick your child up from school and they can come home with us and have a snack and get started on homework. I would be willing to help with some minimal transportation to sport practices. Hours available: M-F before school and after-school till 6:00. I have a background check on file at the school. 

A little about me:I have six children of my own. I have been a stay-at-home mother for over 17 years. My older two (17 & 15) will be in and out of the house but your children would mainly interact with Levi 11, Annie 9, Von 6 and Lily 4. I like to bake, facebook, scrapbook, starbucks, hang out with friends, and being a mom. I have been married to Eric (my hubby) for 20 years. He is a manager for Costco and has worked there for over 17 years.

Reference: I am good friends with Debbie Llewellyn (cat tracks lady, math tutor are a few of the things you see her doing at the school.) She has known my family for 17 years. Announcing exciting changes to the theater program for the 2010-2011 school year!
 W.H.A.T.? We have a new name - an acronym for Washington-Hoyt Afterschool Theater!
 

We are happy to announce that our own 2nd grade teacher Mrs. O’Morlen and Heather Jaasko-Fisher will be leading 2 theater workshop sessions this year- one in the fall for K-2, and another in the spring for grades 3-5.  Our goal is to create a fun experience where students can build confidence and develop acting skills while working in a collaborative environment.  We welcome students of ALL ability levels.  Both groups will end their workshop experience with performances for the school community and tickets will be sold as we have done in the past for Missoula Children’s Theatre.  Each participant will receive 2 complimentary tickets.  The change in program is due to several factors including:  the desire to involve all children who want to participate (eliminating the need for an audition to participate), the intent to have the theater process be the primary emphasis, and the utilization of the wealth of expertise we have in our own school building.

 
K-2 program dates and times:  Tues/Thurs 3:30-5:00 from October 12th – November 18th (6 weeks).  Performance:  Friday, November 19 at 7:00 p.m.  In order for children to have a successful experience it is important that they attend all classes, in addition to the final performance.  Fees and details:  $50.00 fee to participate (payable to WA-Hoyt PTA).  If your student needs support with tuition, please contact Alison Hoseth or Liz Walle (contact info listed below).  Pack a small snack for after school.    A MAXIMUM OF 40 STUDENTS WILL BE PARTICIPATING.  Enrollment will be on a first-come first-served basis.  A lottery may be necessary if we cannot determine who registered first.

School Sweatshirts
School logo sweatshirts and related attire are available for sale twice a year. Orders received during the September sale will be delivered in two batches, one in early October (for those received no later than September 16th) and one by the beginning of November (orders must be in the office by October 4th). The last sale of the school year takes place during November. Orders must be received in the office by November 16th, with shirts delivered to students by winter break.
This is not intended as a fundraiser, however a small profit may incur. Sweatshirts are included as uniform components when worn with a collared shirt. All sales are final, unfortunately we cannot do refunds or exchanges.
Please note: 1/4 zip and denim shirts are available for adults only and CANNOT be worn by students as part of the school uniform. An Autumn Play Date with Puget Sound Revels.

 

Puget Sound Revels

Puget Sound Revels, in partnership with the Seabury School , is offering a drama workshop for children and free public performance of the traditional Mummers Play Harvest Time and the Wild Worm. Children (ages 7 to 14) will have the opportunity to act, sing, dance, create simple scenery and costumes and present the play before a public audience. No previous acting or musical experience is required (limit of 25 participants). Participation requires three after-school rehearsals and one Saturday rehearsal (dates and times below). Children must be available to attend all of the scheduled rehearsals.
 
Parents with questions or wishing to register a child for participation should call Puget Sound Revels at 253-756-1804 by October 8th.

My programs are interactive and tailored to grade level. In my programs, I discuss how I got started, including showing a book that I made when I was in the fourth grade. I stress keeping sketchbooks/journals and I share mine. I shed light on the writing process, from concept to finished book. I will read from my work. Then I do a unique presentation on character creation that will enlighten and inspire students to draw their own characters with my help. I always encourage questions and stress individuality, not perfection." _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ May 14th - The Museum of Flight will present the Flying Gizmo Show.  Website: http://www.museumofflight.org/flying-gizmo .  This fun assembly-style program is designed to help participants discover the science and history of flight through the use of flying toys and models. The clothes closet is low on smaller-sized pants, sizes 5, 6, 7, 8 and 10. We have more than enough in larger sizes, and more than enough shirts, but if you have clean gently used pants of the listed sizes, please consider donating them to the clothes closet.

CHESS CLUB It's not too late to join the Chess Club! Anyone interested in learning to play chess is welcome to join us in the gym on Thursday's after school from 3:40-4:40 PM. No experience needed, we teach the basis on up to advanced strategy ...come and learn to play the fun game of chess! Any questions, call the MacDonald house at (253) 761-0369
 
Chess club is looking for new coordinators for next year to keep the chess club going.  This could be one or two parents who come to school once a week to help set up boards, make sure permission forms are filled out, and possibly help teach beginners by using the curriculum provided (no chess knowledge required).  Let us know if you are interested.

No experience needed, we teach the basis on up to advanced strategy ...come and learn to play the fun game of chess! Any questions, call the MacDonald house at (253) 761-0369
 
Chess club is looking for new coordinators for next year to keep the chess club going.  This could be one or two parents who come to school once a week to help set up boards, make sure permission forms are filled out, and possibly help teach beginners by using the curriculum provided (no chess knowledge required).  Let us know if you are interested.

My programs are interactive and tailored to grade level. In my programs, I discuss how I got started, including showing a book that I made when I was in the fourth grade. I stress keeping sketchbooks/journals and I share mine. I shed light on the writing process, from concept to finished book. I will read from my work. Then I do a unique presentation on character creation that will enlighten and inspire students to draw their own characters with my help. New Student Drop Off Zone Planning Meeting - Wednesday, March 24th at 3:45pm in Main Office
Illegal parking and dropping off and picking up students in the roads and no-parking areas has created a dangerous environment for our students.  Dr. Knight has arranged a meeting to discuss solutions, including using parent volunteers to staff a new student drop off zone (where drivers can come through and drop off their kids without leaving their cars).  We are also looking at ways to prevent cars from parking in the Bus-only zone on Adams.  Cindee Moore, a City of Tacoma Traffic Engineer will also attend to give advice on solutions that will work to make a safer environment for students.   If you are interested in solving the problem, or volunteering, or whatever, please join us on Wednesday, March 24th at 3:45pm in the Main office.

Holiday Card Workshop!
Thursday, Dec. 10, 3:45-5:15 pm, School Lunch Room
 

A fun event for the whole family! The Green Schools Team is hosting our second annual card-making workshop. Make your own cards, gift tags, and bookmarks from reused and recycled materials.  Learn card designs or have fun creating your own.
 
We’ll supply materials and refreshments.  You bring your imagination.

News for November and December! Chess Club is going strong.  Anyone still interested in playing can join chess.  We teach chess from beginner basics to experienced levels.  We now have great curriculum to help us teach and once a month we have a Chess Master coming to teach the students.  Our season runs from now through the end of April ending with the Washington State Elementary Chess Championship on April 24th, 2010.  The first tournament for seasoned chess players is in December, and our beginners will experience their first tournament in January.  Come and learn to play the fun game of chess!  Any questions call the MacDonald house at 253-761-0369.
 
Chess club is looking for new coordinators for next year to keep the chess club going.  This could be one or two parents who come to school once a week to help set up boards, make sure permission forms are filled out, and possibly help teach beginners by using the curriculum provided (no chess knowledge required).  Let us know if you are interested.

We have a great opportunity as a school to raise a lot of money for our school through the Box Tops program.  First off all, everyone should start looking at their food packaging for the Box Tops logo, clip it off and turn them into the cereal box in your classroom! Every Box Top that is turned in earns the school $0.10. I know that doesn't seem like a lot but we have the potential to earn thousands of dollars for our school during the year if we all get started today!  Secondly, the Box Tops "Power of 1" program started yesterday and continues until December 1, 2009. All you have to do is sign up for the "Power of 1" program and that will earn 5 Box Tops for our school!
