e-Bulletin July 17, 2008

We hope you are having a wonderful summer!  Here is some FYI material...

We have a major opportunity this month to come together as a Chapter and make a real difference for Tacoma students. If you can at all come to the meeting mentioned below...please do!  DEB

On Thursday, July 24th the school board will be voting on next year’s school budget.  Our goal is to get 60 people to attend the school board meeting to ask the board to pass a balanced budget for next year that makes no cuts to programs, and pass a resolution stating they will commission an independent curriculum management audit.

We’ve all seen the effects of cuts to schools over the past few years.  It’s time we develop a plan of action so Tacoma students get the best education possible.  This is particularly important right now when we're losing money and the school board is going to have to start making some tough decisions when it comes to funding in the future.  An independent curriculum management audit will help find efficiencies within the district and determine which policies and programs for students are most effective – meaning we can make more educated decisions about future budgets.  You can read more about this audit here:
http://www.pdkintl.org/icmc/audits.htm

At the July 24th meeting, we must have a strong showing of Stand for Children & community members to urge them to pass this balanced budget and tell them we want an independent audit done. This is the bread and butter of what Stand for Children does: we encourage people take ownership and take action.  It is critical for us to get at least 60 people to the meeting to show the school board that we are a strong voice that is determined to improve Tacoma public schools.

Many of you are members of the Tacoma Chapter or concerned parents, teachers, & citizens.  By spending even just an hour at the school board meeting we can show them that the community is committed to making Tacoma schools some of the best in the state.

Can I count on your to be there?

If so, please RSVP to me by Monday, July 21.  You will also be receiving a phone call from me or a Stand for Children member leader to encourage you to attend.

The meeting is at the Central Administration Building at 601 S. 8
th Street on the 4th floor at 6:00pm.

Please take this simple action to help Tacoma kids.  Thank you.

RECYCLED CONTENT SCHOOL SUPPLIES

To save energy and trees and also to ensure that efforts to recycle paper are successful we need to buy products that contain recycled content (otherwise there’s no market for all the paper we’re recycling!).  Many of the paper products listed on the Washington–Hoyt supply list are available with recycled content.  The following items with recycled content are usually available at the stores listed (this is not an exclusive list of stores!).  Most are very reasonably priced; 100% recycled content products tend to be pricier.

Index cards, 4x6 and 3x5, blank and ruled:  Office Depot

the week we’ll sing, act, dance, and play together, connecting creative arts to faith and
discovering ways God works in our lives through art.
All ages will participate in a production of “Noah and his Wild Ark Adventure!”
What do you do if you’re Noah and you hear from the Big Guy (or Gal) Upstairs that you
need to build a huge boat and somehow convince a lot of animals to climb aboard?
Then what do you do with all those critters confined in one space...and it’s raining hard?
What else—you can sing about it!
“Noah and his Wild Ark Adventure” is an original musical written by Judy and Duane
Hulbert based on the story of Noah’s Ark. Children will rehearse in small groups
according to their ages and then all come together for the final show.
Judy Hulbert, Artistic Director of The North End Children’s Theatre and theater director

Free Lead Testing at the Proctor Farmers' Market on Saturday August 2nd from 9-2:00

The Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department is offering free lead testing for children under 18 and pregnant and nursing mothers this summer. This is a free test and families receive the results within 5 minutes after being tested.

Lead poisoning can be caused by exposure to lead-based paint in older homes, ceramics, candies, toys and other things in our environment. The only way to find out if your child or children has lead poisoning is to have them tested.

We will be conducting free lead testing at the Proctor Farmers' Market on August 2nd. If you are not able to attend this testing event you can visit our website to see a list of testing events throughout the summer,
www.tpchd.org/lead. Please contact Lindsay Spencer with any questions, 253 798-4783 or lspencer@tpchd.org.
