Take part in Crime Prevention Month The City of Tacoma is joining with the National Crime Prevention Council to observe Crime Prevention Month during October. Crime prevention and safety takes a community to be successful; it is being aware that a crime can occur, anticipating how, when, where and who might be the victim, and taking action to reduce the chances of it happening. Crime prevention is using instinct, common sense, and action to eliminate or greatly reduce the criminal's opportunity.

As part of a citywide Safe and Clean initiative, the City would like to encourage you to join your community in the effort to reduce crime in Tacoma by 50 percent, within 14 months, and to clean up the city. The Tacoma City Council and city staff are working hard to make Tacoma safe, clean and attractive, and your contributions to the effort will make the difference. You can get started now by: Turning on your front porch light Picking up litter around the block where you live  Together we can have safer and cleaner neighborhoods. Read more about the Safe and Clean effort and find out how to get involved at www.cityoftacoma.org/safeandclean or by calling 591-5130. A Tugging String: A Novel About Growing Up During the Civil Rights Era:  (Hardcover)

David Greenberg is an ordinary twelve-year-old trying to fit in. He knows that his father, Jack, is a civil rights lawyer, but Duvy lives worlds away from Dorothy Milton, a black woman struggling to become a registered voter in Selma, Alabama. When Dorothy reaches out to Martin Luther King Jr. for help, she sets in motion a series of events that—with Jack Greenberg’s help—will open Duvy’s eyes to the reality of racial inequality and forever change the course of history. Blending facts, speeches, memories, and conjecture, this novel portrays the emotions and events surrounding the Selma-Montgomery Voting Rights March.

About the Author
David T. Greenberg is the author of Slugs and many other books for children. He lives in Portland, Oregon.
