CONSTITUTION WEEK: This is Constitution Week, which is a great time to consider the significance of this important document in our everyday lives.   Take a moment to consider the opportunities, protection, and personal freedoms you enjoy each day.  Many of the assumptions we make about our lives exist because of the U.S. Constitution; the structure and function of government and the freedoms guaranteed by the Bill of Rights are part of our culture.
One of our most important rights as citizens is the right to participate in the process by exercising our right to VOTE.  Are you registered?  If you are going to be 18 by Election Day or are new to WA State, you may register on line by October 4.
2008 International Walk to School Day - Mark your calendars for Wednesday, October 8th at 8:15!

th, November 3rd and 17th, December 1st and 15th, January 12th, February 2nd and 23rd, March 16th, April 13th, May 4th and 18th, and June 8th.    Questions?? Email Liz Walle  ____________________________________________________________________________

2008 International Walk to School Day - Mark your calendars for Wednesday, October 8th at 8:15!

International Walk to School Day promotes safe walking and biking throughout the year.  Communities are using the International Walk to School as a step to change community culture and create environments that are more inviting for everyone.
Some reasons to support Walk to School Day:

·        To enhance the health of kids
·        To improve air quality and the environment
·        To create safer routes for walking and biking

Washington-Hoyt will be participating in the annual 2008 International Walk to School event on Wednesday, October 8th, with the support of our Proctor community and MultiCare Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital.  Meet us at 8:15 at the Safeway parking lot on North 25th and Proctor and at 8:30 Miss Peggy will lead us to Washington to enjoy donut holes, coffee, and juice on the playground before school begins.  Please park your car either at the municipal parking lot, across the street from Safeway or at Washington-Hoyt, since we do not want to disturb Safeway’s customers and use their parking lot.

If you would like to volunteer, please contact Lisa Gainey at 253-576-2055 or
Email Lisa
The kids love participating in this, so bundle up and we will see you there!

Thanks for your help,

Lisa

The Sally Foster sale ends Monday, the 22
nd.  Please send all completed order forms with your child on Monday.  Remember that each family that turns in an order form with at least one completed order will have their name placed in a drawing for a gift basket.

The Entertainment Book sale is ending tomorrow.  If you haven't purchased the book that was sent home with your child, please make your decision whether you want to keep it for $20.00 or if you want to return it to your student's classroom. If you want to buy the book, please send the $20.00 to school with your child as soon as possible as the sale formally ends on September 22nd.  We need to have all unsold books returned to the school so we can return them to the company we received them from.  Thank you, everyone, for making this such a great sale.  Kathy Spurrell.  Happy

Our next scrip order date is October 13

Tacoma Film Festival movie for all ages!

The movie is called "JUMP!" and it is a great documentary that follows different teams to the national jump rope championships.  It is G rated so any age is ok seeing it.  I'd love to get the word out to anyone interested in fitness or jump roping. There will be a complete guide to the Tacoma Film Festival inserted in this Thursday's News Tribune. Thanks! Philip

Garth Stein Author of The Art of Racing in the Rain Wednesday, September 24 @ 7 p.m. Olympic Room, Main Library (doors open at 6:30 p.m.) Once every few years a novel comes along that touches its readers so deeply that it changes the way that they look at their own lives. Garth Stein’s THE ART OF RACING IN THE RAIN, a heart-wrenching love story and a moving tale of redemption narrated in the opinionated and insightful voice of an extraordinary mutt, Enzo, is one such novel. Though he has learned so much by watching television and listening closely to his owner Denny Swift’s musings on life and auto racing, Enzo is frustrated by his inability to communicate with anything other than gestures – a bark here, a tail wag there. The words this deep thinker would utter if only he could … (And don’t even get him started on the indignity of not having thumbs!) A firm believer in reincarnation (he has seen a National Geographic Channel documentary on the subject), he prepares diligently for the moment his soul is ready to return to earth and inhabit a human form. Then he will become a gifted race car driver and an honorable man, just like his idol Denny On the eve of his death, this mixed breed looks back on his life and chronicles the ups and downs that he and the Swifts have endured together. This is a very special book. Booksigning follow... books will be available for purchase and signing at the event.
