e-Bulletin May 9, 2011

"The sun was warm but the wind was chill.
You know how it is with an April day.
When the sun is out and the wind is still,
You're one month on in the middle of May.
But if you so much as dare to speak,
a cloud come over the sunlit arch,
And wind comes off a frozen peak,
And you're two months back in the middle of March."
-  Robert Frost

Buy Scrip this May and you could win! We will raffle two scrip items in the May Scrip Order. Just turn in an order for any amount of scrip, and we will enter your name in a drawing to win either $25 from American Eagle Outfitters or $10 from Tacoma Boys. Don’t miss your chance to win! The Scrip Order due May 9th. Cara Reese, dcreese@harbornet.com 752-0200.

Golden Acorn Award Nominations
2010-2011

We all know that our school wouldn’t survive without the hours and hours of hard work by our many volunteers and dedicated educators. Now you have a chance to let those extra special ones know you’ve noticed all they’ve done. If you know of a volunteer and/or an educator who has consistently gone the extra mile for our school and community, be sure to nominate them for the Golden Acorn Award. This extraordinary award only comes along once a year, and the nomination form is your opportunity to shine a light on a deserving person. The benefit of presenting a Golden Acorn Award is two-fold. First, it recognizes an individual who has given outstanding service to children. Secondly, it supports financial grants for students pursuing post-secondary education. Donations are made in each recipient’s name to the fund, which in turn contributes to the future of youth by awarding grants to students who are freshmen entering post-secondary education.
We would like you to participate in the selection of our award recipient(s) through your recommendation.
The Golden Acorn Award Committee will make the final selection.
Be sure to fill out the nomination form below and turn it in to the office by Friday May, 13th.
You may also email us with your nominations to pie.alamode@yahoo.com
We will be presenting the award at the June PTA meeting.
Questions? Contact: Deb Llewellyn @ 752-1494 or Cindy Harkness @ 571-5744

Washington-Hoyt Students, keep your eyes on the Green Schools Bulletin Board!  A new event is coming soon:  Every two weeks the Green Schools team will be posting a new question on the board.  If you come up with a right answer, you could win a prize!  You'll
find answers in the current edition of Cougar Tales or you could come up with your own.

We did it!

We met our March Food Drive goal to help our community! Now...look for a date when we’ll see Mrs. Pedee and Mrs. Norling dressed as bald old people and Dr. Knight wearing his cow costume in a tutu!

We are continuing the food drive through April, and the deadline is Tuesday, May 3rd. If we reach April’s food drive goal, the kids will win a Free Dress Day but the Teachers’s will have to wear the school uniform!

Recycle-A-Shoe: We are now collecting old athletic/rubber sole shoes.
There is a box just inside the front doors at Washington and in the multipurpose room at Hoyt.

A better lunchbox, reinvented for kids, parents, schools and our planet. The Goodbyn lunchbox helps schools to both reduce their carbon footprint and raise money. Our goals are simple:
Reduce the amount of waste created by kid’s lunches. Currently, each child generates 67 pounds of waste each school year.
Make it easy to use. Goodbyn lunchbox is dishwasher safe, has few parts to keep track of, eliminates the need for plastic bags and drink boxes, and is recyclable once you’re done with it at the end of the school year.
Save parents money. Estimates show that parents can save over $190 a year by not using plastic bags and drink boxes.
Make it interesting. Stickers are included so kids can personalize their lunchbox and make them their own. We know that lunchtime is social time, and the Goodbyn lunchbox makes it fun!

This year they are performing Stellaluna - the enchanting story of a baby fruit bat who falls into a bird’s nest. It is adapted from the beloved book by Janell Cannon. Poor Stellaluna tries to adapt to her new home but finds herself the odd one out, hanging by her feet and disgusted by those bugs Mother Bird brings home to dinner.

FOOD DRIVE
ASB has decided to do an ongoing food bank. Each month we will set a goal to try and reach as a school. If we are successful, there will be some type of surprise for our students. This will begin February 1st. Our goal for February is to collect 500 pounds of canned food by the end of the month. If successful, Mrs. Pedee and myself will wear a bald wig for the whole school day (this is what ASB came up with). We will place several containers under the long table in the hallway leading to the lunchroom. When students bring canned items, they may place them there. The Mason Food Bank will be collecting the items at the end of each month.

GOODBYN
