Update November 2009 - Anyone interested in learning to play chess is welcome to join us in the gym on Thursday's after school from 3:40 - 4:40 PM. No experience needed, we teach the basic on up to advanced strategy. Exciting for this year, once a month we will have a Chess Master come to chess club to teach strategy. Also, this year's State Chess Championship is in Tacoma for the first time ever! The Championship is a qualifying event, but most kids who want to go, usually work hard enough to get there. The event is expected to host 1,600 elementary chess players! Will you be one of them???

February 2010 - Washington-Hoyt’s fifth annual Chess Tournament was held February 6, 2010 at Mason Middle School. We hosted over 120 chess players, including
15 from Wa-Hoyt, and 16 schools!! Washington-Hoyt
took home the Fourth Place Team trophy for both the K-3
and 4-6 grade divisions. GREAT JOB, chess players!!
Wa-Hoyt is the only public school that has a chess club
this large, and that holds its own tournament. We are self-supporting, and run by
volunteers.

We teach chess from beginner basics to more advanced groups working on improving strategy and anything in between including learning to use clocks for timed games and how to record games. There are several Saturday tournaments that chess players can attend and complete in as both an individual and as part of the Washington-Hoyt Team. All players must qualify to attend the Washington State Elementary Chess Championship by earning 3 points at one of the local qualifying tournaments.________________________________________________
